Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Conditions
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of many Anxiety Disorders. OCD is characterized by “obsessions” (repetitive thoughts, images, impulses) that lead to distress. “Compulsions” are a perceived coping mechanism done to eliminate the obsession and decrease distress. They can be physical or mental and repetitive or avoidant.
Although OCD has become a part of our everyday lexicon, most people do not actually meet the requirements to be clinically diagnosed with the disorder. If left untreated it can severely impact a person’s day-to-day functioning. In order to be diagnosed, a person’s obsessions and compulsions must take up at least an hour of a their time every day.
There are many different types of OCD, some examples include:
Contamination
Religious
Perfectionism
Identity
Combined medication management and cognitive behavior therapy is the most common method of treatment. Every patient is different and requires a treatment plan that is unique to their needs.
